As a kid I did go through a short faze in which I wanted to be a firefighter. I think it was because of a book I had with super fun old fashioned firefighters complete with the old trampoline net. That is also probably where my “like” of retro styling started.. hmm.. all the pieces are coming together.
Not to go off on a book tangent, but I can remember my favorite story books as a kid were The Little Engine That Could, Scruffy the Tugboat (the book was shaped like a tugboat) and The Fire Engine Book. Of course that isn’t including all my Richard Scarry books, or my Star Wars Record Books.
See? This is why it’s a good thing that I am not a firefighter, my mind wanders.. well, it roams more like a pack of hungry hotdogs. Mmmm.. hotdogs..

I love it!!!!! A friend of mine is a fire fighter. It must be one of the most exciting jobs. There are always interesting stories to tell!
Funny you mention hotdogs because I just drew one!

This is stupid! I mean, that’s what the kids say when they mean, “the best thing ever”, right? Wait, let me find some kids and try it out… okay, I’m back. No, “stupid” apparently means “stupid”. I made one kid cry and the other kid ran to tell his mommy so I had to run away.
When I was a kid I had a Tonka fire truck with a ladder you could crank up and real rubber hose. You could hook a garden hose up to the back and the fire hose would work. I’d spend many happy hours lighting my sister’s Barbies on fire and rescuing them. I wonder what happened to that truck? Maybe my sister knows…

Very cute. I especially like the flashing lights on the hats and the look on the boy’s face!

I like it. The boy clearly is driving to a fire – but the girl thinks she is on a float in the parade. LOL!

Great work – I enjoyed this piece as well as several other recent IF submissions that I’ve missed (your art has a real heart to it) – I also enjoyed taking a walk through the Scribble Guild – Congrats! I love the proportions on this, as well as the expressions on each of their faces. Love your stuff!

Hi eyeryone, thank you so much for visiting, and for the wonderful comments.
Mike, I had the same fire truck. It came with an awesome helmet too. It was stupid awesome!
Doug, I use Adobe Illustrator with a Wacom tablet for my illustrations. Occasionally I will use Photoshop to touch up the final file, but mostly it’s all illustrator.
Thanks again everybody.
Cheers,
David & Pickledog

I had an awesome metal fire truck with ladders that could reach the tallest imaginary skyscrapers, but, alas, I don’t remember a cool hose.
Absolutely wonderful illustration! I love the flashing lights and the movement.

Your work is always full of character and fun to look at. I also like the little cute details you add, such as the very cool yellow boots on the girl. And the funny comments as well. But man, it’s late and now I’m craving hotdogs!

oh yeah, I am all about the Richard Scarry books. Somehow, retro style books always incorporated the trampoline net where anyone and everyone can get out of a burning building so easiy and safely.
btw the scribble guild is lookin’ good! You guys are a talented group indeed:-)

Love the expression on his face. That is priceless. Will he tell her and the doggie to get serious once they arrive?

I wanted to be a firefighter too. Then an artist firefighter that could dance-I think it went something like that. Nice work David. Good luck with the Guild. Cheers!
